Class Experience Not a boring old history lesson! Students will learn about the difference between a Suffragist and Suffragette, how women fought for the right to vote, the sometimes militant means they took (bombings), how long it took for everyone to finally get the right to vote (hint: it’s longer then you think!), and some of the women who ran for president even before they could vote for themselves! In this one-day class, history is told through colourful and imaginative stories that are factual and fascinating. The focus isn’t on years and dates but sparking curiosity in your learners. In a safe and supportive learning environment I like to bring imagery to students so they can see, hear, smell and imagine that they have time-travelled to the period we are discussing. Each class will consist of a PowerPoint lecture, historical context to immerse us into the period we are discussing, and a guided or free discussion/question period. Learners will leave the class with a basic knowledge of each of the suffragists and suffragettes, the fight for the vote, the historical period, women who ran for president, a handout summarizing the class, and a list of additional resources including books, podcasts, movies, and websites. No prior knowledge is necessary, but if you have a fun history fact, even if its unrelated to the topic, please share it at the end of class! Due to the nature of the class, no homework will be assigned. A handout will be provided to engage your learner and direct their attention. It’s probably best to have a glance at it before the class begins, but not necessary.
