Heroes! Prepare for an adventure of mind and toughness. Students solve Sudoku puzzles and answer Marvel trivia. The better they do on the first challenges, the better chance they will have to finish the final puzzle of the class. Format of class: 1) Introduction - Explain rules of the classroom (respect, no cheating) and the challenges. 2) Sudoku Training and Puzzle Solving - I will teach a beginner technique that I call the "Iron Man" strategy; sudoku strategy guides also call this the "Hidden Single" strategy. Students learn to check for where numbers are not possible and fill in the possibilities remaining. I will help students who are stuck on a puzzle. When students finish a puzzle, they "recruit a Marvel hero" to join their team which means a brief image or sound effect. 3) After about 20 minutes, we take a break to answer Marvel trivia questions and let our brains rest. 4) Endgame: Thanos challenges the players in a final puzzle. In the final puzzle, all the students work together on the same puzzle. I share my screen so each person can see the puzzle as it is filled in. Students take turns to fill in a spot in the grid. Thanos has some surprises for the heroes as well. The class works together to solve the puzzle which defeats Thanos. This class is best for students who are already familiar with Sudoku solving. To spend more time learning how to solve puzzles, please see my "Minecraft Sudoku" class. This class must begin on time. I will open the classroom a couple of minutes early to let students in. The class will lock after I finish the introduction in the first minutes of class.
