Class Experience

In this one time class, students will learn 4 strategies for subtraction with regrouping. Each strategy is independent of the others and the student will be able to pick which one fits their learning style the best! In my second grade class, the students really loved having multiple strategies and tools in their toolbox to help subtract in ways that fit them best as a learner.
Students should be familiar with the concept of subtracting, but do not need to be proficient at it. We will go over basic subtraction and vocabulary before we begin, then get into the strategies!

4 Subtraction Strategies:
- Base Ten Blocks
- Number Line
- Expanded Form
- Standard Form

** Please request other times and dates for your learner if this is a skill they need help with! :) I am happy to provide 1:1 tutoring on the topic as well, send me an email to request.

Learning Goals

2 NBT B.5: Students will fluently add and subtract within 100 using strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.

    Hello!
My name is Sydney Walden and I am 25 years old. I have been in the Early Childhood Education field for over 3 years and I am certified in EC-6 Generalist, ESL, and Special Education. I have many passions including exercise, reading, writing, and teaching! I am very excited to be able to share my passion for social skills, games, exercise and academics with your young learners. Being a young teacher, I bring to the classroom a plethora of new and inventive strategies to teach with technology resources as well as strategies to encourage my students to be as successful and engaged as possible. I truly have a heart for the children and believe that I have a specially designed purpose in the education system. I love teaching curriculum, but I also really enjoy developing relationships with my students and encouraging them to become amazing people in our society. I feel that children learn best when what they are learning is based around their interests!
I was born and raised in Texas, graduated from Texas A&M University, and now live in Chicago! My husband is in the Navy, which allows us to move around often and experience new places. I am a brand new mom to a little girl, who was the first baby born in Chicago on New Years Day in 2021! These are just a few reasons why I am pursing this opportunity, as I feel it would be an amazing fit for our family's lifestyle.
