Description
Class Experience
In this fun and interactive FLEX course, students will dive into subtraction. For this course, students should already be able to identify numbers 0-10 and count 0-10. This course will begin with learning the concept to "take away" using objects. Using objects we can practice having a total, then taking a certain amount away, and finding what's left. We will then learn different ways we might come up with a difference of 5 (4-1, 8-3, etc.) We will then move onto subtracting with objects 5...
Students will learn to subtract to within 20 by understanding "take away", subtracting with objects, subtracting with numbers, using numbers lines and other strategies. Students will identify the number when the difference is already known.
I have years of experience teaching math skills in the elementary school. I also have taken many professional development courses to continue my craft in providing effective instruction that helps students achieve goals and become successful learners. More than anything, I am just a person who cares and wants children to feel successful and accomplished.
Students will have assignments which will be found in the classroom tab. All assignments for the week are due on Sundays. If you would like some extra practice for your child, please let me know, and I will be happy to provide something extra.
Dry erase boards are very helpful in practicing math skills and keep you from going through tons of paper. Handouts will be available each week. One great idea is to get sheet protectors for handouts like number lines or ten frames so your child can reuse them over and over for practice and limit the need for more printing. I may ask students to use objects from home for subtracting.
I will be assessing students' progress through completion and mastering of assignments. I personally enjoy providing "glows and grows" when providing feedback. I will always provide positive feedback and add any skills your child could grow more in to better master the skills being learned.
No live meetings, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
