Class Experience

Social-emotional learning helps children move from lower level thinking to higher rational thinking.  Learning social skills can lead to better mental health and more success in academics and life. I will use different stuffed animals to teach students sixteen important social skills by video recordings and activity 
 There is no previous knowledge required.

Learning Goals

Students will have an increased understanding of sixteen important social skills.

Lesson 1:

LISTENING

 Listening help us learn and know what to do. People like to be listened to and we like others to listen to us.

Lesson 2:

SELF-CONTROL

 We all get upset or angry at times. It is important to know how to get calm. This lesson will show some calming techniques, what is your favorite way to calm yourself?

Lesson 3:

SHARING

 Sharing with others makes you a wonderful friend!

Lesson 4:

KINDNESS

 When we are kind to others they are often kind to us. Kindness also makes us a great friend.

I have a masters degree in education/school counseling.  I have been in education for over 30 years working at all levels.  I started in middle school which I loved but then was asked to go to various elementary schools.  I was a little skeptical but then found I loved that level also.  Finally I was asked to start some programs at the high schools.  Would I be able to enjoy and have great rapport with them?  Yes, loved that level too,  I just love working with kids of all ages!  I want students to be successful learners.  Research has established that social and emotional (SEL) skills play an important role in having success in school and in life.  It has even been shown that students with good SEL skills score better on tests.  It is my passion and mission to help students become healthy learners and that will be the goal of the classes I teach.
I like to be outside gardening, hiking, and playing with my grandkids.  I look forward to many happy and rewarding experiences with my future students.
