Study Skills: Note Taking

In this ongoing course, students will meet with the teacher to learn and practice note taking techniques using mainstream news media. We will practice note taking, finding main ideas, and defining words within context.

Mastery Evaluation
1-2 hours per week. I will ask the student to email a photograph of their notes at the end of each class for evaluation. Notes will be graded on a A-D scale for neatness, details, and application of note structure.
Progress Report
I am able to update parents on their student's progress at the conclusion of the course. This is contingent upon the student's willingness to share with the class and/or the instructor. I will ask the student to email a photo of their notes at the conclusion of each session.

Class Experience

US Grade 8 - 11
Beginner - Intermediate Level
Students will work with instructor to build note taking skills. Students will be introduced to different techniques, resources, and important details when it comes to taking notes. We will review mainstream news articles and videos as we discuss what is noteworthy in a Socratic Seminar. Each week the reading and watching schedule will be discussed and determined based on the flow of the seminar. Students will be challenged to demonstrate independent thinking by contributing relevant insights and sharing their notes on screen for feedback. 

Each class meeting will be structured the same with one of the note taking methods above. Students can anticipate the following class structure:

We will utilize popular education resources from YouTube including: History Channel, Crash Course US History, and more.
Supply List
No need to make any purchase. All information will be shared via links or PDF documents. 

A notebook or notebook paper and writing untencil. For our scrapbook notes students can pull scraps from a newspaper, candy wrapper, magazine, or any other source. They will need glue to add their scraps to their notes.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
