Effective study skills are important for success in any in-person or virtual learning experience, yet, these skills are often missing from curriculum standards. Join this 4-week flex course to build up your study skills and feel empowered to be successful in any academic course. *Please note I also offer this class for a younger age group. Visit my profile for the ages 9-13 listing.* This is a flexible-style class, meaning there are NO live meetings. There will be pre-recorded lessons to watch, as well as many activities to complete, at the student's own pace. The week's content can be completed at any time. New materials will be released each week, but no sooner, so the student will need the full four weeks to complete this class. Objectives of the course: Week 1: 1. Students will learn how to study effectively based on their specific learning style. 2. Students will gain an understanding of how information is encoded in the brain: the science of learning. Assignment: learning style self-assessment Week 2: 3. Students will learn different note-taking strategies. 4. Students will have opportunities to practice note-taking strategies using a variety of media. Assignment: note-taking practice Week 3: 5. Students will be given multiple strategies for memorizing and understanding information. 6. Students will practice the study strategies so they are prepared to apply them to their own schoolwork. Assignment: memorization practice Week 4: 7. Students will learn general test-taking strategies that can be applied to any type of exam. 8. Students will learn about the different types of multiple choice questions and how to approach each. 9. Students will learn strategies for answering questions when they have no choice but to make an educated guess. Assignment: multiple-choice practice test (very fun!) and independent Kahoot! quiz. New content will be posted weekly, on Mondays, including pre-recorded videos and discussion prompts and assignments. Throughout the course, students will collaborate on Google Jamboards to share what they have learned, learn from each other, and critically reflect on their learning styles. Students will post their assignments in the classroom to gain positive and constructive feedback from other learners as well as the teacher. Learners will reflect on their current school work to see how concepts in this flex class relate to their current learning and share these findings with other learners through a video assignment shared in the classroom.

Hello learners and families! I have so much gratitude for being a part of the Outschool community.
My undergraduate degree is in elementary education but I also have experience teaching in the junior high setting. I tutored grades 5-11 math for six years and enjoyed every hour I spent with the students. Though my intention was to create many math classes here on Outschool, I am finding that I love to design and teach classes that are more suited to the 'Life Skills' category. I love to break down tasks for students and empower them with academic skills that are often left out of the traditional curriculum: test-taking, studying, note-taking, etc.
When I am not teaching, I enjoy playing soccer and badminton, as well as training for long-distance running races (when there's no snow here in Canada!)
I fully believe that I will learn as much from the students as they will learn from me; I value collaboration and discussion. A question from a student is a "peek" into their brain for me.
I look forward to teaching your child!
