Study Skills for the Middle and Early High School Student
Class experience
This class is also taught in a 1-week CAMP version and a FLEX version (pre-recorded content, but committed teacher interaction). See links to these in the Parent Guidance/Considerations section. Join us as we go from bare-bones basics of setting up a study space (within the confines of what's available) through organizing your spaces (including electronic files), creating schedules, how to set good (and achievable) goals, various note-taking strategies and reading strategies for...
I have taught study skills to my students and science team students for at least 10 years. For the last three years this has been for middle schoolers who are preparing for Science Olympiad competition with very little support--so these skills are critical and they have been wonderfully successful!
Students will be required to have the week's printables ready each week before class. Likewise they will need to print out homework materials each week and these will be posted either just as class begins each week or within the 3 hours after class. For week #4, they will need to have a hardcopy textbook of any kind on-hand. Online textbooks don't work as well. Feel free to borrow one from the library if you don't have one at home. Your librarian can point you to the section in your library that houses these. IT CANNOT BE THE STUDENT WORKBOOK--it must be the textbook.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Please feel free to add your older students to this class--especially if they struggle with study skills and organization. The content is not relayed in a way that would make any student feel as though they were in a course that is "beneath" them and I have often taught this to tweens and teens simultaneously without issue. We start from the very basics, but it does not seem "too simple" even to the older student. This class is also taught in a 1-week CAMP version and a FLEX version (pre-recorded content, but committed teacher interaction) if one of these accommodates your family better. Camp students will still have daily homework but removes the content for identifying and using quality resources.
