Class Experience

Do you love Studio Ghibli and would love an art course focused on your favorite characters? Want a fun and relaxed setting to practice your drawing/coloring/watercoloring skills? Then this class is designed for you!

This class is intended for the Studio Ghibli buff as students will be drawing different characters from multiple films! In this art class, students investigate basic drawing techniques through drawing the "Studio Ghibli Style". Some of the characters that students draw come from the films Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, and Ponyo! Students tackle projects by using different techniques and different materials each week. They will learn basic principles and apply them to Studio Ghibli characters. 

ITINERARY: 
💥 WEEK 1: Soot Sprites (My Neighbor Totoro/Spirited Away): Students will learn to use a basic shape to create the Soot Sprites. Character and prop interaction will be encouraged.
💠 Materials for Week 1: Paper, colored pencils and a pencil sharpener. 

💥 WEEK 2: Blue/White/Grey Totoro (My Neighbor Totoro): Students will learn how to use multiple simple shapes to create a character. Character and prop interaction will be encouraged.
💠 Materials for Week 2: Paper, pencil, eraser, pencil sharpener, black pen (for outlining) and colored markers. 

💥 WEEK 3: Seascape Ponyo Scene: Students will create a full seascape that is inspired by the opening scene in Ponyo. Students will focus on creating their seascape and incorporate the background with their creatures. Drawing and outlining will be the focus for this class. 
💠 Materials for Week 3: Watercolor paper, pencil, eraser, pencil sharpener, and permanent black marker (sharpie). 

💥 WEEK 4: Seascape Ponyo Scene: Understanding warm and cool colors to create a cohesive watercolor art piece. Students will complete their watercolor project from week 3. 
💠 Materials for Week 4: Finished outlined design of Ponyo, watercolors, brushes, cup with paper, and paper towels.

This class will be presented via Keynote and is an art based class. This is a FLEX class and is PRE-RECORDED. This means students will watch the pre-recorded video. Students will engage in questions, class discussions, and art assignments. Homework is optional. Students will be encouraged to share their artwork and engage with their fellow classmates in questions and discussions.

🔰 Flex classes are fantastic for international students (Mrs. V is located in Texas). 
🔰 Students can work at their own pace. No need to wait on others or feel rushed. 
🔰 Flex classes are an excellent choice for families with busy schedules. 
🔰 This class is a "flex" class, meaning there is no live component, and all interactions between students and the teacher happens on the class page. The live version links are at the beginning of this class description. 

FLEX FORMAT: 
🔹 Video Content: Weekly videos with a step-by-step breakdown of the art assignments are posted. Some videos will have a 20 to 35 minute duration. The work time for the student will be roughly an hour long. Students will review the video. 
🔹 Discussion Prompt/Question/Check-in: Students respond to a weekly discussion prompt and/or question(s) posted by the teacher. 
🔹 Complete Artwork: Students spend time completing their sketches. 
🔹 Submit Artwork: Students are required to post photos of their completed sketches in the classroom on the designated post. If the student would prefer to keep this private, they can post privately to the teacher as well. Keep in mind, sharing artwork is essential in a flex class. 
🔹 Feedback: The teacher and students post positive feedback on each other’s work. Mrs. V offers private and public feedback at the request of the students. Individualized feedback will not be given unless directly requested. Maturity, kindness, and thoughtful comments are encouraged and cultivated in the classroom.

Students will learn the following art/drawing fundamentals: 
✅ Utilizing basic shapes to create a more complex form. 
✅ Basic introduction of how to apply props. 
✅ Basic introduction of how to approach character interaction. 
✅ Introduction to utilizing watercolor. 
✅ The confidence to continue a similar art project on their own after the class has been completed.

Parental Guidance
This class is geared for younger students and is an art class. On week 4, students will be watercoloring. Please be prepared for possible spills or mess.
