Class Experience

Do you love Studio Ghibli and need to work on your drawing skills? Are you currently trying to learn how to apply expression to your anime faces? Are you interested in learning how to draw anime faces in the Studio Ghibli style? Then this class is designed for you!

This class is intended for the Studio Ghibli buff as students will be drawing different characters from multiple films! In this art class, students investigate basic drawing techniques focusing on the faces and expressions of popular characters in Studio Ghibli. Some of the characters that students draw may come from films such as Kiki's Delivery Service, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, and more! Students will learn basic drawing principles and apply them to Studio Ghibli characters. Students will learn to manipulative a human face to show emotions such rage, sorrow, joy, silly and more!

This class is designed for the anime fan who wants to take their drawings to the next level. Art experience is not necessary but helpful. Please note that this class can be considered a fast pace class. We work together step-by-step as a class. 

ITINERARY: 
💥 WEEK 1: Spirited Away: Character focus on Haku, Lin and Chihiro 
💥 WEEK 2: Totoro: Character focus on Mei, Satsuki, and Dad
💥 WEEK 3: Kiki's Delivery Service: Character focus on Kiki, Tombo, and the Other Witch
💥 WEEK 4: Princess Mononoke: Character focus on San, Ashitaka, and Lady Eboshi
💥 WEEK 5: Castle in the Sky: Character focus on Sheeta, Dola, and Pazu
💥 WEEK 6: Porco Rosso: Character focus on Porco Rosso, Donald Curtis, and Fio
💥 WEEK 7: Howl's Moving Castle: Character focus on Sophie, Howl and Merkl
💥 WEEK 8: Ponyo: Character focus on Ponyo, Sosuke, and Grand Mamare

This class will be presented via Keynote and is an art based class. This is a FLEX class and is PRE-RECORDED. This means students will watch the pre-recorded video. Students will engage in questions, class discussions, and art assignments. Homework is optional. Students will be encouraged to share their artwork and engage with their fellow classmates in questions and discussions. 

Why Flex?
🔰 Flex classes are fantastic for international students (Mrs. V is located in Texas). 
🔰 Students can work at their own pace. No need to wait on others or feel rushed. 
🔰 Flex classes are an excellent choice for families with busy schedules. 
🔰 This class is a "flex" class, meaning there is no live component, and all interactions between students and the teacher happens on the class page. The live version links are at the beginning of this class description. 

FLEX FORMAT: 
🔹 Video Content: Weekly videos with a step-by-step breakdown of the art assignments are posted. Some videos will have a 20 to 35 minute duration. The work time for the student will be roughly an hour long. Students will review the video. 
🔹 Discussion Prompt/Question/Check-in: Students respond to a weekly discussion prompt and/or question(s) posted by the teacher. 
🔹 Complete Artwork: Students spend time completing their sketches. 
🔹 Submit Artwork: Students are required to post photos of their completed sketches in the classroom on the designated post. If the student would prefer to keep this private, they can post privately to the teacher as well. Keep in mind, sharing artwork is essential in a flex class. 
🔹 Feedback: The teacher and students post positive feedback on each other’s work. Mrs. V offers private and public feedback at the request of the students. Individualized feedback will not be given unless directly requested. Maturity, kindness, and thoughtful comments are encouraged and cultivated in the classroom.

Learning Goals
Students will learn the following art/drawing fundamentals: 
✅ Utilizing basic shapes to create a more complex form; the human head. 
✅ Basic understanding of the male and female face. 
✅ Proper measurements and proportions in regards to the human head. 
✅ How to execute multiple angles of the face; front, 3/4th, side, up and down. 
✅ How to properly apply different emotions on their characters. 
✅ The confidence to continue drawing the anime face on their own after the class has been completed.

Mrs. Vallarta has her Bachelors in Fine Arts and has taught art for 18+ years. Five of those years has been online.
