Do you have a teen that LOVES talking about their special interests? Can they go on and on for hours about one subject they adore? If so, THIS is the class for them! :-) In this class, each student will choose one topic they are passionate about. In their own time that week, they will deep-dive learn about their topic at home through research and then prepare their own presentation to share with their classmates. Their presentation can be ANYTHING. Maybe they want to create a model with clay or LEGOS? Perhaps they love writing short stories? Artists can create some visually stunning presentations in many forms! Comic strips, a song they've written, maybe even an interpretive dance! Camera-shy students can even create a picture slideshow presentation and tell all about what they are showing on their screens! ALL forms of presentations and ALL age-appropriate subjects are approved. And YES, your student can absolutely choose the same topic more than once. After all-- it's a special interest! Each class will begin with a 5 minute introduction and some friendly interactions between students to build a community of learners. The teacher will use a timer to keep things moving along. Then we will begin presentations in alphabetical order, based on first names. Each student will have approximately 5 minutes to present their topic and share their love for it with their classmates. (Students may have a few minutes more or less than this 5 minute time frame, depending on how many students are enrolled at the time) After all presentations are finished, we will tell each student what we loved learning about from their presentation. To end the session, we will brain storm future projects/subjects together, and get ready for our next class. The first class will consist of meeting one another and introducing ourselves and our most favorite special interests to one another. We will then be going over potential options for presentations moving forward. We will brainstorm together some unique ideas for show casing our subjects, and I will explain how the future classes will be held. Each student will get time to interact with their classmates and teacher. You may enroll your student into as many 4 week sessions as you'd like when your kiddo wants to come back and share their love of something(s). If your student is extremely shy, the student may submit their project and any written paragraphs (and instructions) to the teacher for me to share on your student's behalf, at least 24 hours before class begins. :-) No pressure here. All personalities welcome. Students can sit back and enjoy if they'd prefer. **I DO KINDLY ASK THAT NO WEAPONS OR INAPPROPRIATE IMAGES, DISTURBING IMAGES, ETC BE SHARED. If your student has a love of guns, knives, etc. they will not be able to share those in the classroom. Most subject areas will get an okay from me, but if you are concerned, PLEASE reach out to me and let me know what you are interested in showing/talking about so we can make sure to keep everyone comfortable in the classroom. Thank you for your cooperation!**

Other Details
Learning Needs
This class is designed to support the needs of children with ADHD, OCD, Autism, or other special learning needs. Often times, these students would love to have an outlet for explaining their love for their special interests, besides family.
Parental Guidance
Every student has their own special interests. With the exception of obvious no-no topics, there may be things that come up that you or your learner do not approve of. If it is a sensitive topic, I will gladly send out warnings before class so you and your learner can decide if they want to participate in that student's presentation or not. I am happy to send students into "waiting rooms" if there is a particular subject they don't feel comfortable with. Please just let me know in advance if possible!
Supply List
The supply list is up to the student. Students are in control of what materials they would like to use for their presentations in class. No supplies are mandatory and kids can simply talk about their special interests when it is their turn. I try to make my classes as accessible as possible to all students. Please reach out with any questions.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Sources
Students will be researching their special interests in their own time using their own sources.

Teacher expertise and credentials
As the mother of a neurdivergent child, I have plenty of experience with special interests! My learner has a huge love of K-POP and CATS! :) i am pretty sure they could talk nonstop for eternity about both. I think every child should have a comfortable space to express themselves and share their favorite things through project-based learning. I created this class for that specific purpose. All learners welcome!
