In this multi-day class, we will work on writing a 5 paragraph essay. The class is limited to 1 student or two siblings so that each learner is able to get individualized attention and benefit from specialized feedback. Class One: In the first class, students will have a brief time to go over where they feel they struggle with writing (getting started, adding details, having it make sense, etc). Next, we will go over a "formula" that can be used to write any simple five paragraph essay. Lastly, the student will pick a topic to write an essay for the next class. We may have time to find sources for the topic depending on questions and brainstorming session. Class Two: In the second class, we will use the 5 paragraph essay template to create an essay step-by-step. The teacher will work with the student to make sure they have created a thesis statement, topic sentences, conclusion sentence and supporting details. Students may finish the essay in class, or may need to continue working on it at home before the last class. Class Three: In the last class, students will share their completed essay and the teacher will give constructive feedback on grammar, spelling, readability and flow. Students will have the ability to take the feedback to revise their essay into a polished product either during class or after. Students will receive a template that they can use to write 5 paragraph essays in the future for other classes and subjects. If you have siblings of similar ages, you may request for me to open a second enrollment for that sibling. Important: We will use a Google Doc to create an essay that the student and teacher can work on at the same time. This works best if the student can use a spit screen with our meeting and the doc or they can sign in twice from two devices (phone/tablet and computer).
Learning Goals
Students will learn how to create a simple, organized five paragraph essay with Introduction, three Body Paragraphs and a Conclusion.
