Description

Class Experience

*Distinguish between a grapheme (such as sh, ea) and a marker (which has no pronunciation)
*Understand the influence of word origin (i.e. etymology)
*Understand the importance of morphology (such as <tri>) on spelling and pronunciation
*Understand and create a word sum
*Understand and create a matrix
*Understand how to use reference materials to be a word detective
Structured Word Inquiry (SWI) is used as a way to understand orthography (spelling). I have been studying SWI for more than 5 years and taken multiple classes about how English spelling system works. I enjoy exploring words and seeing student's eyes light up when they finally understand how spelling works.
Practice will be given in between sessions focused on the day's concepts. They will take about 15-30 minutes. While they are optional, if you are new to SWI they are highly suggested to complete to solidify the information.
All students should have several blank papers to write and draw with at each class.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
4 hours 35 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
Dictionaries will be used.
