Getting ready for first or second grade? Are you looking for ways to engage your early or struggling writer? Let's start by helping them express themselves in a relaxed setting where they will be instructor-supported to produce strong sentences that are grammatically and mechanically correct. Together, we will answer a daily writing prompt and try different techniques to strengthen prose. All students will receive help with spelling, punctuation, correct letter formation and spacing (if...
This class is taught in English.
Students will review the essential parts of sentences and practice writing in on lined pages about their day or other age-appropriate subjects. All students will receive assistance with spelling, punctuation, correct letter formation and spacing (if handwriting), and difficult word definitions. Along the way, we will explore ways to modify nouns, verbs and explore 1st, 2nd, and 3rd person voice. More advanced students will be challenged to enhance their writing with stronger word choices, modal verbs, adjectives and adverbs. In addition to the example topics in the course description, the teacher may rotate through these additional structural modifications: Week 1) Sentences using first-person subjects in different verb tenses Week 2) Sentences comparing first and second-person subjects (comparatives + “be verbs”) Week 3) Sentences using third-person subjects using names and pronouns Week 4) Sentences using modal verbs and/or adverbs of frequency Week 5) Sentences with "invisible actions" Week 6) Sentences using strong adjectives Week 7) Sentences using third-person subjects in different verb tenses Week 8) Sentences with desire Week 9) Sentences requiring special punctuation Week 10) Sentences requiring special punctuation (dependent clause starts) Students who finish the task early are welcome to write more than the requested amount or feel free to draw a simple illustration to go with their task. Note to Parents: Due to the personal nature of each student’s day and mixed learning levels, each lesson will be adjusted in difficulty and primary objective. Parents can expect students to gain an increased tolerance for writing and more consistency in sentence structure which can positively influence academic coursework.
