Strong Foundations for the Guitarist by Jared Meeker is a course designed for the complete beginning guitarist, showing them a clear method to become an intermediate guitarist in 12 fun and rocking classes. 1. Class 1 covers parts of the guitar, tuning, basic technique for fretting and picking hands, and learning several melodies on one string at a time. 2. Class 2 covers reading standard music notation, alternate picking. reading rhythms, and basic melodies in first position. 3. Class 3 covers chord diagrams, strumming and slash rhythms. As well we will review reading music from the previous class. 4. Class 4 covers reading Tablature and students will learn several popular riffs that move across adjacent strings, using riffs from Nirvana, Aerosmith and more. As well, we will continue to work on open chords and chord transitions. 5. Class 5 covers more chord strumming patterns and bass chord patterns. 6. Class 6 covers power chords and goes in depth into palm-muting and left-hand dampening to play riffs by Blue Oyster Cult, Black Sabbath, Journey, and more. 7. Class 7 covers basic chord theory and blues guitar basics. 8. Class 8 goes into barre chord basics and several songs that use a few barre chords, featuring songs by the Beatles, CCR, etc. 9. Class 9 covers left-hand techniques such as slides and hammer-ons and pull-offs. These will be explored through riffs by bands such as the Rolling Stones, the Eagles, the Bee Gees, etc. 10. Class 10 covers Chord Riffs where students will learn more advanced use of sliding chords in the style of Jimi Hendrix, Dire Straits, and more. We will also go over guitar exercises to increase speed and strength. 11. Class 11 goes over various kinds of finger-picking. We will study Travis picking and how it is used in various songs by the Beatles, Kansas, and Led Zeppelin. 12. Class 12 will cover lead guitar playing and go through several note-for-note solos. This class will provide a thorough understanding of guitar basics and an overview on what it takes to go from a beginner to an intermediate guitar player. A little bit of practice in this class can lead to a lifetime of love for music.
Learning Goals
Students that may have played a bit on their own can still benefit greatly from this course. It is called "Strong Foundations" because this course will give you the knowledge and physical ability to develop in the most efficient way, developing the student's understanding of music theory, ear-training, and technique.

Supply List
A 71-page book PDF will be provided for the class by the instructor. Students are required to have a guitar (acoustic or electric), several guitar picks, extra strings, and a tuner.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Los Angeles-based guitarist, composer, producer, educator, and author Jared Meeker has performed throughout the world. Jared graduated from California Institute of the Arts and has taught workshops at USC, UCLA, Seattle Pacific University, SUNY, Los Angeles Music Academy, Crown of the Continent, and the National Guitar Workshop. Jared music compositions have appeared in award-winning films including Fuel and Sunken City, which won best music at the Dubuque International Film Festival. He has also composed original scores for films including Take Me To Tarzana, directed by Maceo Greenburg, and Interreflections, directed by Peter Joseph. His music has been featured on hit television shows Dexter and Smash, as well as on various programming on MTV, Showtime, NBC, VH1, CBS, and TNT. The diverse roster of artists Jared has worked with include Nate Dogg, Snoop Dogg, Myka 9, N.A.S.A. / Squeak E. Clean, Karen O, Salvador Santana, and Hollie Cook. Jared has appeared in music production video courses for Producertech and in dozens of guitar, bass, and mandolin videos for Alfred Music. Jared also worked as a sound designer with Loopmasters UK to create a few award-winning sound sample libraries as well as releasing his own plugin called DejaVu by Meeker FX. He has been featured in Guitar Player and Guitar World, has written columns for Premier Guitar, and authored several books on guitar styles for Alfred Music.
