Class Experience

Drawing is not typically an active activity. Hands tightened around pencils, backs leaned over the paper, all cause strain on the body. This class is here to introduce your young artist to healthy habits early to help prevent future strain on their drawing muscles!

We will be going over simple stretches for the fingers, wrists, back, legs, and general body. Students will be lead in a fun, guided stretch session over the course of the class. All the stretches are very basic and can be done in a variety of different locations or spaces, so they don't need a lot of room to move around.

This is a physical movement/exercise class NOT a drawing class! Although these stretches are aimed at those who draw a lot (stretching the muscles that get strained in typical drawing positions) these are still fun stretches to warm up for the day and non-artists are welcome to join!

Learning Goals

Students will learn:
How to start and continue to take care of their body as they draw.
Why breaks are important and how they can implement them into their creative time.

Parental Guidance
Although the stretching in this class is simple, there is always a risk of injury since this is a physical activity. Proper supervision can help minimize any risk; although it is not necessarily needed to do the stretches, it is recommended especially for kids new to the activity. Students will need enough space to stand, bend their legs, and fully stretch their arms out in front of them. Make sure the space is clear so nothing can accidentally be knocked over while stretching out the arms and legs. A water bottle is encourage for hydration but also as a tool in one of the stretches.
Supply List
Although most of the stretches require just yourself, I do show off 2 exercises that require household objects:
Hair tie or rubber band (elastic)
Water bottle (not only for hydration!)

We do not focus long on the ones that require objects and they can still be done (though less effectively) without them!

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi! I have been animating for around 7 years, with 3+ years of professional work under my belt. I have taught 2D animation classes at the Columbus College of Art & Design for their Saturday morning Art Classes.

Outside of teaching I work as multimedia specialist for a nursing college and freelance for different companies, making educational animation and illustration for museums, apps, or anything in between!

Animating is some of the most fun I have had creating, and I think it is one of the best ways to express anything! From telling personal stories to explaining complex topics in chemistry or physics, it is a versatile medium that can lead you down any path. It also teaches you to look and observe the world, once you learn animation you will never see movement the same way again!

At home I have a basset hound/labrador mix (a bassador if you will) and he basically takes up all my free time. If you hear whining or howling during a class, that's Stan!
