Class Experience

The learner increases their understanding of math concepts and their mathematical skill level, particularly in the areas that are the most challenging for the learner. They gain confidence in their own mathematical ability, and experience an increased willingness to try new kinds of math tasks.
Over my thirty-year career as a classroom teacher, I have enjoyed teaching math to students in grades 1 to 6. I have worked as a private math tutor for students in grades 1, 6 and 8. Working 1-on-1 with a student affords the opportunity to learn just how they are approaching each task, to identify any misconceptions or unclear areas, and to build upon the learner's unique strengths. It is absolutely delightful to witness those wonderful "Aha!" moments, and to use the learner's work samples to demonstrate to them their progress over time.
Homework is assigned only if requested by the learner or their grownup.
Supply List - a small whiteboard and marker - several sheets of regular printer paper - markers to write on paper (pencil doesn't show up on screen) - counters (e.g. beans, pennies or decorative glass pebbles) - a deck of regular playing cards - 4 or more 6-sided dice in a cup Optional Supplies (These are very helpful for learners in the younger grades.) - math linking cubes, such as these at $10.60: - a set of double-6 dominoes - several sheets of 1/2-inch graph paper, which can be printed free from here:
Learner progress is assessed informally through observation, and written feedback is provided after each session.
55 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
Some of my math games are ones that I have adapted for online play from these sites:
