Chess naturally encourages the development of the three main executive functioning skills: planning ahead, impulse inhibition, and flexible thinking. It is a research supported intervention for students with ADHD, Autism, or other executive functionnig challenges. Students will develop an awareness of executive functioning skills and strategies for using them during chess or other activities. Students will develop an appreciation of chess. Students will naturally practice social skills in a supported setting. Students will develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills through chess puzzles. Students will practice developing, supporting, and presenting an idea.
I've been playing chess for twenty years. I have been teaching chess online for two years. I teach over 100 chess students a week and have instructed over 1000 unique students of all ages. Additionally, I have ADHD and am Autistic myself and have participated in chess based interventions for executive functioning and social skills as both a student and participant.
