Playing casual chess is a great way to develop executive functioning skills as it requires thinking ahead, impulse inhibition, and flexible thinking to respond to the changing state of the board!

Class experience

Students will develop an awareness of executive functioning skills and strategies for using them during chess or other activities. 
Students will develop an appreciation of chess. 
Students will naturally practice social skills in a supported setting. 
I've been playing chess for twenty years and using chess as a teaching strategy for two.  I also have been working with middle school students on executive functioing strategies as a peer mentor for other autistic students for over a decade.
