Class Experience

The London System is a very popular opening for players of all ages and experience levels. It's flexible, but also unresponsive, allowing the player with the White pieces to play it in almost every game. It's simple but powerful and has been played by almost every current Chess Grandmaster. Because of its popularity, every aspiring chess player should have a plan to beat it and know when to use it! In this introductory class, we'll learn the history and theory behind the London System, the strategy and tactics White should know while executing the opening, and Black's best chance responses. We'll analyze games played by pros to develop chess study skills and learn from the best. Each day we'll have a short lesson and then learn through guided play where each game will feature the London System to maximize practice time and retention.
Chess is a research supported way to increase math skills, executive functioning, working memory, focus, and impulse control which benefits students with ADHD and Autistic students. . Practicing these skills in a natural setting allows all students to gain additional support while having fun and engaging with peers. Additionally, the group atmosphere allows students to practice social skills like turn-taking and collaboration and life skills like conflict mediation and handling disagreements.
