Class Experience

The Ruy Lopez is one of the oldest and most extensively studied openings in the game. It is used heavily by the best chess players in the world (featuring in six games of the world chess championship). It's also fun, fast, and can be played by either color while emphasizing the core principles of the opening to improve players fundamental skills. Therefore, it makes a great starting point for young chess players wanting to begin learning theory or getting more competitive.
In this introductory class, we'll learn the history of the Ruy Lopez, learn how to get to the starting position, and explore variants from there. Instruction will focus on the critical ideas and theories behind the opening so young players won't get bored and bogged down by details. On the other side of the board, we'll learn black's options when facing the Ruy Lopez including main lines and unique gambits. Instruction will consist of nearpod, short video clips, analyzing famous games, and practice drills. Students will have the opportunity to implement the strategy during real games in each class.
Chess is a research supported way to increase math skills, executive functioning, working memory, focus, and impulse control which benefits students with ADHD and Autistic students. . Practicing these skills in a natural setting allows all students to gain additional support while having fun and engaging with peers. Additionally, the group atmosphere allows students to practice social skills like turn-taking and collaboration and life skills like conflict mediation and handling disagreements.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I've been playing chess for 20 years and teaching online for three. I have taught over 1000 students to play chess online. I believe chess is a tool for life and I focus on using chess to develop natural life and social skills for neurodiverse groups of learners in a natural, supportive, fun, and interest-based setting. Although these classes are ability-based, that is to ease match-making and reduce frustration for learners rather than due to a strict focus on skills progression.
