Description
Class Experience
Weeks 1-4: Opinion Writing Student will write an opinion piece on any topic of their choice. Week 1: Choose a topic to write about. This topic can be controversial ("eating meat is immoral") or whimsical ("Thor would win in a battle against Batman"). The topic should be something the student is passionate about or cares a lot about so they are motivated to have a strong opinion as they write. Student will learn the basic 5 paragraph essay structure needed for academic writing. Student will learn to distinguish between the 3 types of academic writing for middle school. Student will learn the mechanics of writing. Student will learn proofreading and editing skills at the middle school level. Student will use grade level vocabulary.
Students may be asked to finish researching their topic if time runs out during class. Students may be asked to finish editing their papers if time runs out during class.
Students will need a Gmail account to share their papers through Google Drive. Students will not share their papers or email addresses with other students. Students will give me access only to their paper for this class so I can read their paper and help them edit in real time.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
1 hour per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
