Street Smart Psychology: How to Break "Bad" or Build "Good" Habits
Class experience
US Grade 8 - 11
Have you ever tried to break a habit? How did it go? Did you rely on willpower, aka self-control, drive, determination, self-discipline, or resolve? Have you ever wondered why it can be so difficult to break a habit? If you're like most people, you relied on willpower to stop whatever "bad" habit you had, but soon discovered how challenging it is to maintain your determination. In this lesson, we'll dive into what habits are, how they form, steps you can take to break the "bad" habit...
This class is taught in English.

My studies include a master's degree in Educational Psychology from Ball State University; a graduate certificate in Positive Psychology from the University of Missouri-Columbia; a bachelor's degree in Psychology; and, I'm a certified life coach. During graduate school, I completed 8-week courses in MBSR training through Palouse Mindfulness and the Science of Happiness offered by UC Berkeley — once as an online TA. I teach pre-k through 12th grade in three school districts as a substitute teacher. In this capacity, I've worked with children who have educational and behavioral challenges such as ADHD, ADD, ODD, test anxiety, and trouble reading. I've worked in basic skills and resource classrooms either as the lead teacher or a para-educator. As a freelance writer and editor, I explore the intersection of positive, neuro, and behavioral psychology. My work is available to read through several sources: PositivePsychology.com, Thrive Global, Ardent Path Journal, The Ascent, Better Humans, Publishous, The Startup, The Writing Cooperative, The Post-Grad Survival Guide, and Fine Lines Literary Journal.
You're invited to take notes if you like.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
The content is age appropriate for the age group specified. I restrict discussions to the topics being covered. Here, it's "how to break a "bad" habit." Discussion centers on the research and ideas presented. For example, we'll discuss the habit loop and how it works, how habits form, and research by various scientists, but we won't talk about habits involved in mental health issues (how to stop negative self-talk, for example). Examples I might include are: Breaking a nail biting habit; Starting an exercise habit; Starting a flossing habit. The point is to keep the lessons fun and informative.
I teach a variety of series on Outschool: Storyteller Squad, Kori's Clubhouse Summer Reading, and Street Smart Psychology. The Storyteller Squad teaches learners how to increase their writing output, use prompts, indie publish on various...
