Description
Class Experience
Many learners face the same problem when reading. They can read each individual word, but when they've finished a paragraph or a page, they can't remember what they read. The secret is that "good readers" aren't born, they're made. Readers use a variety of strategies while they're reading to stay focused and remember what they read, even if they don't realize they're doing it! In this class, we'll learn different strategies that can help any learner improve their reading comprehension skills...
Learners will be able to use various strategies to improve reading comprehension Learners will be able to identify and define unknown words in a text Learners will be able to summarize what they have read and make predictions Learners will be able to visualize their reading Learners will be able to make inferences based on textual evidence
I graduated from Brigham Young University in 2015 with a degree in English Education and have been teaching English/Language Arts in the classroom or online ever since, including a year specifically teaching reading classes.
Each week, learners will practice the reading strategy for that week by reading from a book of their choice and filling out a handout. Learners will be expected to read for at least 20-30 minutes each week outside of class to complete these activities.
Learners will need to choose a book to read during the course of this class. If they are having difficulty choosing a book, they can contact me for recommendations based on their interests. Learners will need to bring a second device such as a phone or tablet to class each week to access Nearpod. Handouts and other materials will be provided to learners each week as necessary.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
- Nearpod
Learners will be assessed based on their completion of strategy handouts outside of class. We will also discuss our successes and difficulties with each strategy at the start of the next class. Letter grades are available upon request.
55 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
