Assessment
Learners know when their audience of listeners are gripped, listening breathlessly to their story. Therefore even as students have the freedom to write to please themselves, they will model their own work after the best writing in the class and do their best to hold everyone's attention through listening time.

Class Experience

US Grade 7 - 9
If you like writing workshops that are a mix of weirdness, horror, suspense, and science fiction--you're in the right place! Learn about all the different varieties of fiction called 'speculative fiction'. This large bubble term includes a wide varieties of gothic, horror, all kinds of science fiction and fantasy. It doesn't stop there. There are also genres called alternative reality, near future, and slipstream. Speculative fiction can even combine the genres above.

In this workshop, you'll get writing exercises each week to help you explore these different worlds of writing--but you never have to do the exercises if you don't want to. Instead you can go where you want to in the story and what you want to happen to the characters you choose to write about.

On our first day we'll build a world and locations that have all kind of possibilities for story building.
This workshop pulls together other writers who love writing. By sharing a setting for our stories, you can inspire each other creatively.

On our second day we'll start creating characters for our world. This is the day you'll receive your first writing prompt. Although you don't have to use the prompt, most people are willing to share their story with the group at the end of the workshop. People in the workshop will respond with what they like and what they remember about the writing.
Learning Goals
Students will spend time on writing, strengthening their focus each week. They will spend time in the class practicing listening skills, presenting their work to others out loud, as well as learning to formulate effective criticism of their peer's work in generous and useful ways.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have an MFA in creative writing, and have inspired kids and teens to love writing stories for over 25 years. In addition to this, I've taught at the university level. My last course at Longwood University was called SOCIETY & ITS MONSTERS. I have a deep appreciation for weird writing and my own fiction focusses on creating 'unsettling effects'.
