Class Experience

Set in the fictional town of Hawkins Illinois in the 1980s Stranger Things follows the adventures of three teenagers who encounter a mysterious girl with supernatural powers. The teens make it their mission to solve the case of the disappearance of their friend Will Byers. In the second season Will Byers is safely returned to Hawkins but the upside-down appears to be manifesting itself in Hawkins following Will's return. Meanwhile the mysterious girl Eleven remains in hiding following the events of the first season.

In this class we will come together as fans of Stranger Things to discuss one episode of the hit Netflix series per week. All viewing should be done outside of class. This class will cover only the second season of Stranger Things. Future classes will cover the other seasons.

Each student will be asked to share what they liked or didn’t like about each episode. I will then talk the class through a scene for scene retrospective as I break each episode down via guided discussion. This is the same approach I use for my other film studies classes on Outschool. A sample schedule has been listed below. This class will be offered throughout the year.

Class 1 Chapter One: MADMAX

Class 2 Chapter Two: Trick or Treat, Freak

Class 3 Chapter Three: The Pollywog

Class 4 Chapter Four: Will the Wise

Class 5 Chapter Five: Dig Dug

Class 6 Chapter Six: The Spy

Class 7 Chapter Seven: The Lost Sister

Class 8 Chapter Eight: The Mind Flayer

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have a bachelor's degree in educational studies and more than 20 credits towards a masters degree in history. I have 5 years teaching experience including teaching film studies courses. I have been a Stranger Things fan since it first premiered in 2016. I also have lived experience having once been in the same age group as the teenagers portrayed on this show, though I am an adult now I can still relate well to this age group.
