Stranger Things (S4): Coming of Age & Identity in the 80s Writing
Class experience
US Grade 7 - 10
*I have a class on the first 3 seasons of Stranger Things, and while it may help to take that class first, it is not a pre-requisite Class 1: Students will introduce themselves to me and the rest of the class with their name, a fun fact, and their favorite characters. This class will recap seasons 1-3, film analysis and pop culture analysis terminology that is used in my Stranger Things s1-3 course. Homework: Watch S4, episodes 1+2 Class 2: This class will focus on discussing...
Students will learn about coming of age stories, identities, and the 80s as it relates to this period piece.
I have a degree in English & Textual Studies with a minor in Human Development & Family Sciences. Combined, these taught me about the development of humans and the intricacies of abuse, relationships, mental health, and queer discourse (LGBTQ+ identities). I took multiple Queer Sexuality and Gender Studies courses toward my degree, and I have facilitated a discussion group in Human Sexuality. I have participated in many LGBTQ+ groups, and have also written and edited articles for a LGBTQ+ Policy Initiative. I have been teaching on Outschool since 2019, and focus on film and pop culture analysis and have a running class on Stranger Things covering the first 3 seasons. Period pieces have to fulfill certain requirements to fit into the category (like props and a knowledge of the time period), and coming of age pieces tend to highlight characters emerging into their own identities.

Stranger Things is TV-14 for fantasy violence and sexuality representation. Please read carefully in the class description - this class will touch on the HIV/AIDS epidemic (as listed in my sources) and the Cold War since these were both things plaguing the USA in 1986
These sources will not be given in class, but help in my own personal research on time period involving the Cold War and queer discourse. https://books.google.com/books?hl=en&lr=&id=9DaQDwAAQBAJ&oi=fnd&pg=PA91&dq=stranger+things+and+queer+identity&ots=R7fyRdJYm9&sig=SuKERAtN01DTbila7BOMHeJcFTk#v=onepage&q=stranger%20things%20and%20queer%20identity&f=false https://books.google.com/books?hl=en&lr=&id=irSQLb4xiJ8C&oi=fnd&pg=PP11&dq=the+cold+war&ots=NzfK48DsQq&sig=XMV0pP1CFIpT52DMZeCMScLcW-w#v=onepage&q=the%20cold%20war&f=false https://books.google.com/books?hl=en&lr=&id=nvPEDrScjmAC&oi=fnd&pg=PP9&dq=being+queer+in+the+us+in+the+80s&ots=vrYGrjDE8T&sig=zwI5TasNg-o-aAyN2hrNB3-X5I8#v=onepage&q&f=false
As human beings, we are always consuming popular culture. Streaming services like Netflix, Disney+, and Hulu have taken over our televisions with entertaining original series. As an Outschool teacher and avid binge-watcher, I create courses using...
