Class Experience

Students will use critical analysis skills to understand and analyze the show. Students will have a chance to use writing skills to analyze the show using the literary terms.
I have over twenty years of experience teaching rhetoric writing, reading, language arts, and critical thinking skills. I am familiar with the material, and have the experience to foster meaningful learning. I have taught English and Language Arts for many years at the high school level. My experience includes teaching history as well as social studies, as these topics often go hand in hand with literature, writing, and humanities. I have a degree in English Teaching, and I enjoy teaching students how to explore historical events through written material. As an English teacher, I have taught students to read and critically analyze differentiating opinions about fictional works and non-fictional topics and arrive at a substantiated belief. In addition, I have taught in a team taught, multidisciplinary Language Arts/History class at the secondary school level. British Literature is on of my favorite topics to teach and learn about, because the depth and breadth of it is vast and connected. I enjoy harvesting connections between literature and history. I have been teaching American Literature to students since I began teaching in 1998. I am intimately familiar with the literary time periods, contexts, and authors we will be covering in this course.
My qualifications include:
BA in English from the University of New Hampshire
Graduate credits in Secondary Ed
TESOL Certification
NH and AZ State Teaching Certifications (expired)
10 years as a High School Literature Teacher in public schools
and 4 years Middle School Language Arts Teacher in AZ Public Schools
2 years as ESL Teacher at UNH
2 years as ESL/Lit/SAT/ELA Online Teacher for ASAA
6 years ESL Teacher Ages 13-18 for multiple online platforms
I am also a huge movie buff. I absolutely enjoy the horror and sci fi genres, and I have been writing literary analysis articles about horror books and movies for years. I have studied acting, directing, and production extensively. I was in a play in 2019, and I continuously study the production and director's commentaries of films I enjoy. I keep up with my knowledge by reading and watching everything that I can about the show.
If a student wants to write about the show based on the class they had that day, they can. I will read the writing and give feedback.
No assessment aside from checking for understanding
55 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
Stranger Things is in the genre of horror and Science Fiction. It contains scenes that may not be appropriate for all viewers. Also, some of the coming of age plots will be discussed, as some of the characters are struggling with sexual identity. I will allow for productive and positive discussion in these areas. I will not tolerate bullying or hate.
This show is not appropriate for every learner. Season 4 is especially scary. Many kids may enjoy it, but it is far too scary for others. Spoilers will be mentioned.
