The content of this course is meant to inform the learner about the realities of possessing their own cellphone. In Lesson One, we will have a group discussion about the excitement of getting a new phone and how the phone will change how they interact with others. We will discuss both positive and negative aspects of phone use and the learner will feel very aware of the many dangers related to having a phone, including: cyberbullying, catfishing, predators, social isolation and the impact...
To be able to understand the immense responsibility of phone ownership and to remain safe from people who may try to access the leaner through their phone.
I have worked with adolescents and pre-adolescents for 15+ years, mostly as a counselor and always in a way that is meant to help them mature and grow strong. I have been witness so the dawn of young people having cellphones and the messy rollout that has gone hand in hand with young people having this opportunity. In addition to having a Master's Degree in Counseling, I am a strong believer in young using technology in an informed and self-disciplined way.
The learner is encouraged to be thinking about this class topic during their everyday lives, but no actual homework will be required. The parents will be required to submit their thoughts regarding the developing safety plan.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
40 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
This class is meant to assist, but not replace the parenting that is already taking place. I strongly encourage parents to have an ongoing discussion with their child regarding everything we are learning in class.
