Class Experience

In this one time session, the student will learn how to count the numbers 1 - 10 in English and Spanish as we read along the book "Un Elefante" by Patty Rodriguez and Ariana Stein (Published by Lil Libros - permission for use granted).

We will start this class by introducing ourselves and showing our favorite stuffed animals. The student will be introduced to the numbers 1 - 10 as I begin reading each number in the book and have them repeat the numbers in both English and Spanish after me. I will show them my favorite stuffed Elephant and other Elephant figures to count them together in between each number to keep them engaged. Each page in the book has an elephant with the number that they will be learning as I read it to them. Each student will have the opportunity to show their stuffed animals and count them with me to practice what they have learned. I like to ask questions about what they brought and have them tell me something about their favorite stuffed animal. Depending on what animal they bring, I will show them what they are called in Spanish to extend their knowledge.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I graduated in 2012 from the University of Texas - Pan American with a bachelors in Rehabilitative Studies. I worked as a children's social worker for 6 years and moved on as an Elementary substitute teacher for 1 year. I have also been working as an online ESL teacher and I am fully bilingual in English and Spanish. I grew up speaking Spanish fluently coming from a Mexican - American family. I have taught bilingual lesson plans in an Elementary level setting. I would love to teach beginner students the basics of speaking Spanish while also introducing basic elementary level concepts like shapes, numbers and letters. I would love to expand their critical thinking skills and enhance any prior knowledge. I am a mother of a 2 year old and I am currently introducing him to phonics and letters in both English and Spanish. I enjoy reading to him and acting out the animals and characters in the stories.
