US Grade Kindergarten - 2
In this lesson, with permission from Scholastic, students will enjoy listening to the story Officer Buckle and Gloria by Peggy Rathman. The children at Napville School always ignore Officer Buckle's safety tips, until a police dog named Gloria accompanies him when he gives his safety speeches. Students will discuss the characters, learn how to visualize events, and talk about the theme of the story. After the story, the students will create their own classroom or school safety tips on the attached Star paper or on a blank sheet of paper. After sharing their tips, we will play an interactive Safety game.
Learning Goals
Students will ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text. Students will describe how characters in a story respond to major events and challenges. They will describe the overall structure of a story, including describing how the beginning introduces the story and the ending concludes the action. Finally, they will also focus on visualizing the main events of the story.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi! I'm Teacher Shannon! I have taught 2nd grade for 24 years. I've taught both Gifted and Regular Education. I was a substitute teacher for 2 years working with Early Childhood students as well as older elementary students. My passion is reading! I love Children's Literature and I have even co-taught college level students on "What's New In Children's LIterature?" for the last 10 years. What drives me as a teacher is to have a fun, safe, interactive classroom while embracing lots of quality literature. I want kids to love reading as much as I do and to have fun learning! And maybe make a craft or two along the way!
