In this lesson, with permission from Scholastic, students will enjoy listening to the story Officer Buckle and Gloria by Peggy Rathman. The children at Napville School always ignore Officer Buckle's safety tips, until a police dog named Gloria accompanies him when he gives his safety speeches. Students will discuss the characters, learn how to visualize events, and talk about the theme of the story. After the story, the students will create their own "safety tip" on the attached STAR paper...
Students will ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text. Students will describe how characters in a story respond to major events and challenges. They will describe the overall structure of a story, including describing how the beginning introduces the story and the ending concludes the action. Finally, they will also focus on visualizing the main events of the story.
