Students will hear the story of Tyree Guyton. Mr. Guyton is an African American artist who is known for the art he creates in his neighborhood and yard, using items considered trash to many. Students will discuss the idea of who gets to decide what is art and what materials are considered trash. After the story has been read, students will use the random items considered trash or recyclables from around the house to create a piece of art. The teacher will provide an inspiration word (Ex....

This list are some suggestions. Students may use various items found in nature and around the house. I would recommend students have about 5-6 items to work with, in addition to glue and/or tape, scissors, and a marker. Potential items could include; cotton balls, buttons, sticks, pebbles, rice, macaroni, corn, beans, newspapers, magazines, box, bottle, bottle tops, popsicle sticks, construction paper, paper clips, rubber bands, puzzle pieces, old birthday/greeting cards, leaves, flower petals, seeds, old sock/ fabric, feathers, googly eyes, old doll parts/broken toys, yarn, etc.
Younger students may need help with art project, in terms of fine & gross motor skills.
