Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 5
In this class, students will learn how characters come alive through stories. We discuss what makes a good character and then take a look how certain writers have come up with creative characters. In this class, students will be taught to see beyond a book character and be encouraged in the class to see how we can change a story to make it our own. Students do not need to have read any of the books prior to this class and no knowledge of each character is needed. I will talk about each character and we will watch videos that show who the characters are.

Week 1. What makes a good character.
Week 2. Alice in Wonderland: we will take a look at how Alice in Wonderland interacts with other characters in this amazing book and what we can learn about her and how this writer has developed her character.
Week 3. Beatrice Potter: how a simple rabbit brought books to life and how Beatrice Potter took her love of nature and developed characters that are now loved throughout the entire world.
Week 4. Paddington Bear: how one teddy bear was brought to life and even made into a movie. In this class we take a look at simple things that we might have and learn through the character of Paddington Bear how we can make a great story. This will be done through impromptu storytelling.
Week 5. Toad of Toad Hall from The Wind in the Willows: A classic children's book. We will take a look at how this character was developed and how Toad may perceive the world today.
Week 6. How you can become a great writer and what can we take from authors to become great writers?

In each class we will be analyzing the characters, watching videos that illustrate that character and then creating impromptu stories from what we have learnt about new characters that we have created.
