Welcome to Storyteller, a standalone one time class that looks to build Learners understanding of the stories they share and the ones told to them on a daily basis. In one hour we'll breakdown a "Story" in its three primary functions: Connection - A story that helps friendships and other relationships. Manipulation - A story that seeks to change something within the listener. Education - A story that intends to pass down knowledge to the listener. We'll learn how these different...
Learners will learn: - The basic purposes of why we share stories in the first place. - How to better listen to what is being told to you so that you can understand why it's being told to you. - The difference between knowing something and being able to teach it. - Some simple conflict resolution skills. - Build confidence in sharing their own thoughts and opinions.
How we communicate to one and another is becoming a paramount skill to develop within our society. I've spent a better part of the last decade learning how to teach these instinctual skills in a way that steps away from memorization techniques, and calming methods. These classes were designed by me and won't be found anywhere else. It blends creative thinking and philosophy in a way that helps Learners put together the pieces themselves so that they can decide how best to use the lessons in their own life.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
1 hour per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
When discussing factors of manipulation of stories, current events and news will be used as examples of forms of storytelling and the effect they can have on society. However, this is not a political class and we won't be diving deeply into our opinions. This will be used to go over some basic debate techniques and other communication lessons.
