Class Experience

In this Storybook STEM class your child will participate in a Read-Aloud of the featured story and complete a coordinating STEM activity. The class will be broken up into two parts focusing in both English Language Arts (ELA) and Science/STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math). This class is great for learners of every level, from beginning readers to STEM gurus!

For the first half of the class your child will follow along as we read the featured story. This is more than just your average story reading as it will not only include reading the the story, but model fluency, answer reading comprehension questions, find real life connections within the stories, and cover many other important ELA strategies for young readers. This will be a very interactive Read-Aloud as students will be able to ask and answer questions throughout and participate in discussion during as well.

Once our story and discussion has concluded we will begin our STEM adventure! This STEM activity will relate to the story that was read and challenge your child's creativity and critical thinking skills. Most of the items required to complete the STEM project you will even be able to find already lying around the house! Children will have access to paper materials that can be printed at home prior, to make planning and reflecting easier, or they may just follow along to create their own STEM product as we go! I will guide your child through each one of the steps in their STEM project and discuss the importance of each step in our design process.

At the conclusion of our class, each student will be able to share their final product result and discuss their findings. This is a vital step in scientific and design process :)

Learning Goals

Students will practice and learn key ELA strategies for young readers that will include (but not limited to) reading comprehension, fluency, real world connections, making inferences, comparing and contrasting, etc.

Students will build and perfect problem solving skills. In STEM activities, students learn how to analyze problems and then work to correct and overcome them.

Students will be able to express their creativity along with innovation as they work through the design process of the STEM activity.

Students will build confidence and speaking skills as they share their final products with their class peers.

STEM education is an amazing learning experience that integrates four major content areas and brings real-world application to those areas. Students have the opportunity to collaborate and apply all of their skill and knowledge to solve a problem or improve an idea.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Kimberly Boone and I have been teaching lower Elementary for about 10 years, 7 of which have been with a STEM/Science Charter School in Jacksonville, FL. My classroom is a very interactive and engaging classroom focusing on Science/STEM, Character Development and Cooperative Learning. I am a huge advocate for being KIND (Keeping It Nice Daily) and helpful. I feel it is extremely important to not just make sure your students are learning but also leaving your classroom as better individuals. I have a passion for creativity as well and love to create my own things for my classroom with digital design and making things look "nice" and organized :) This past year I was honored to receive the "Teacher of the year" award for my school and had a wonderful time networking with other teachers around the county/state. I am married with 3 children of my own and a GoldenDoodle Doggy we adore! When I am not in the classroom teaching I am spending time with them outside any chance we can. I look forward to meeting your children and beginning them on a journey to love learning <3
