US Grade Kindergarten - 3
Beginner Level
In this class students will learn the foundational elements in writing a creative story. I will use examples from mentor picture books to help students make connections between story elements and writing.

Topics that will be covered:

-parts of a story
-sequencing and timelines of events
-major and minor characters 
-describing characters with details
-story settings and characteristics
-problem and solution in a story
-putting story elements together to form a cohesive story
-using illustrations to convey setting and character information

Students will learn to identify elements of a story including characters, sequence of events, setting, problem and solution.

Lesson 1:
Introduction to Story Writing
 In this first lesson a mentor story will be read and then students will be introduced to story elements. We will discuss sequencing, characters, setting, problem and solution and find examples from the mentor book.

Sequencing Events in a Story
 This week students will learn about the importance of telling story events in order. We will use a mentor text to discuss timelines of events and event order.

Lesson 3:
Characters in a Story
 This lesson will focus on characters and describing them in a story. We will refer to mentor texts to see examples of character descriptions and will learn how to describe a character.

Lesson 4:
Story Setting
 Lesson 4 will focus on story setting and we will again use examples from mentor texts to discuss different types of settings and how we can describe them using both words and illustrations.

Pre-Requisites
Learners should be able to write a complete sentence.
Supply List
Students will need a pencil and crayons. The other materials are attached to each lesson post and will need to be printed out at home.
