It is often said that, " A picture is worth a thousand words." In this one-time class, students will practice their creative writing skills by writing a narrative short story. The class session will start with a mini lesson where the teacher will review the story elements essential to narrative writing. The students will then share the image that they have chosen to write about with their classmates. The students will have the opportunity to brainstorm potential story ideas. Then the students will complete a graphic organizer (provided by the teacher) to plan their story. Once the writing process begins, the teacher will guide the students and help them to expand their use of details. If a student is unable to finish their story during class time, they are welcome to submit it to the teacher for feedback after class.
Learning Goals
Students will improve their understanding of narrative story writing. The students will collaborate with one another to give suggestions when planning their stories. The students will receive feedback from their peers as well as the teacher while brainstorming.
While writing a short story, students will practice skills such as, writing dialogue, adding descriptive details, and writing a story with a clear beginning, middle, and end as well as a problem and solution.
The students will socialize with one another while planning their writing.
