Class Experience

A read aloud story time featuring Jessie Sima's Not Quite Narwhal followed by a happy lively discussion.
I encourage all my readers to ask questions, talk about their favorite parts of the story, and practice active listening with the others. Jessie Sima has given us a lovely story with very engaging illustrations. This story will lead us to touch lightly themes of acceptance and friendship, and a celebration of differences.
Scholastic has given this book a guided reading level of K, and so we'll encounter a few new or seldom read vocabulary words. We'll discuss these along the way.
We'll also look closely at the illustrations, have a fun scavenger hunt, and draw our own Not Quite Narwhal inspired art!

Learning Goals

We'll touch lightly on themes of acceptance and friendship.
Discuss any vocabulary words the class finds to be challenging or interesting.
Engage with the illustrations through a scavenger hunt.
And create our own works of art.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
I'm an avid reader, and an author.
I was never so surprised in all my life as when my son told me he "just wasn't into reading" and that he thought "writing was the worst part of school." I had to think quick before he missed out on all the magic that I knew was waiting for him within the pages of books.
And so family book club was born. And then books and friends, and soon my house was overflowing with reluctant readers bouncing up and down and waiting desperately to tell Miss Tammi all their favorite bits from last week's reading.
I have spent ten years coaxing children into eager readers and confident writers. I love to watch those smiles light up when they realize there is a whole hidden world inside of books. In that world they never need to try to fit in, or please other people. In that world they are welcomed, they are wanted, and they are inspired.
