Have you ever sent a coded message and wondered what might happen if it didn't get through? What if someone managed to decode it and find out what you were planning?! Meet the beautiful Koong-Shee and her brave lover, Chang, and find out what happened as a result of the coded messages they sent to each other. Their story has been immortalised in the beautiful design known as the 'Willow-Pattern' design - perhaps you might have some plates with this design on them in your house. Now you get...
Stories encapsulate truths in a way that encourages lifetime engagement. Through engaging with this story (and others on offer by Leon on Outschool), students will learn about cultural context, ethical and moral values, historical eras, and make connections between the themes in the story and their individual experiences.
No homework is necessary for this story-based class.
Please note that unless students have a very good reason not to have their video on during class, I expect students to be visible and participate actively in classes I teach. The digital classroom is a social space shaped by our intentions and our activity - and I encourage participants to actively build the kind of space they feel comfortable in, and to actively work on creating a space in which others can also feel comfortable being and acting in. Outschool does provide a 'verification' system for those who have good reasons not to participate visually, and I will respect and support that fully. Please consult https://support.outschool.com/en/articles/4063624-learner-verification for further information and contact 'email@example.com' at least a week before the start of your first class to allow time for the verification process to be completed. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation in this matter.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Engagement is the key here - and the ability to connect with the imagination and let it soar - the curated debate at the end, along with the power of story are designed to achieve this - where progress or attainment is obvious in the class it will be noted on by the tutor. Sometimes the effects percolate over time. I'd be keen to hear from parents and students if this is the case.
25 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
This is an oral storytelling rendition, not a read story, and will be tailored to the needs or sensitivities of those present, based on advance notice of any special requests, needs or requirements from parents - so if your child loves to hear about blood and gore, or is sensitive because of a recent bereavement, do let me know and I will make sure they are included in an appropriate telling.
