Students will learn about Johnny Appleseed (John Chapman) and his adventures in planting apple trees across the country without any shoes on his feet throughout the reading of the book Johnny Appleseed by Patricia Demuth. Along with a discussion of the book, students will complete a hands-on STEM (STEAM) challenge in which they will create a pair of shoes for Johnny Appleseed to wear using various craft supplies and recycled materials. Please keep in mind that depending on the materials and methods chosen by students, there may not be time to finish the project during the time allotted.
Learning Goals
- Students will be able to actively listen to a read aloud and participate in a class discussion.
- Students will be able to complete a STEM challenge by following the engineering design process.

Parental Guidance
Using hot glue is optional, however, students may need assistance if you allow them to use it for their STEM project.
Supply List
*This is just a list of suggestions. Students will design their project based on the supplies they have available to them. - Scissors - Glue (may want Elmer’s, Tacky, and hot glue) - Tape (may want a variety such as scotch, masking, and duct tape) - construction paper, tissue paper, scrapbook paper, craft foam - recyclable materials work great such as small boxes and plastic containers from food packaging, toilet paper and paper towel tubes, disposable paper products such as cups, plates, bowls, and silverware, foil, q-tips, cotton balls, straws, and toothpicks.
