Story Time STEM: Bring Your Pumpkin to Class for Measuring and Counting Fun!
What's included
2 live meetings
50 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
Students will learn about pumpkins throughout the reading of the book How Many Seeds in a Pumpkin? by Mararet McNamara. Along with a discussion of the book, students will practice math skills such as measuring and counting using their very own pumpkins. Depending on the ability of the students, they may choose to count their pumpkin seeds by twos, fives, or tens as illustrated in the book. During the 2nd day of class, students will be counting the pumpkin seeds, so they will need adult assistance with cutting the top off of their pumpkin. This can be done just before the start of class so the students will have as much class time as possible for the activity. Please keep in mind that depending on the number of seeds in the pumpkin and students’ counting ability, there may not be time to finish counting all of the seeds in the time allotted. There also won’t be enough time for the students to finish carving their pumpkins during class time, and they will need assistance with the carving of their pumpkins when class is over. Day 1: Read and discuss the book How Many Seeds in a Pumpkin?, measure the pumpkin, and count the number of lines on the pumpkin, and compare these measurements to everyone else’s in class Day 2: Count pumpkin seeds by twos, fives, or tens and discuss a plan for carving the pumpkins
Learning Goals
- Students will be able to actively listen to a read aloud and participate in a class discussion.
- Students will be able to measure an object and skip count by twos, fives, or tens.
