Class Experience

In this story time math class, learners will hear the story "The Lost Button" from Frog and Toad are Friends by Arnold Lobel. Then they will learn what an attribute is and how objects can be sorted in different ways. They will play an attribute guessing game called "Guess My Button!" where they will figure out which button the teacher is thinking of by asking questions about attributes (i.e. size, color, shape, and number of holes).

Students will develop attributional thinking skills and problem solving skills.
Students will identify patterns, attributes, and similarities and differences of objects.

I am a certified elementary school teacher and a certified library media specialist. I currently am an elementary school librarians in a preK-grade 2 school but I previously taught first grade for 6 years. I saw how important a strong foundation of mathematical thinking is for students. I used sorting and classifying activities, and many other tools, to help build my students' mathematical thinking.

A printable handout with buttons to sort will be provided. Learners should cut these apart before class.

Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

30 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
