Class Experience

In this fun educational class we will meet to share stories with African American main characters. In each class a story will be read aloud to students with pausing points for questions and discussions. Then we will practice retelling important details from the stories and if time allows, writing a review of the story. I will be reading the following stories:
Come on, Rain by Karen Hesse
Those Shoes by Maribeth Boelts
The Quickest Kid in Clarksville by Pat Zietlow Miller

The class format can be seen below
- Introductions and expectations
- Self Assessment of retell skills utilizing provided activity sheet
- Read Aloud with questions and connections
- Retell: Collaboratively write and/or draw the elements of a retell utilizing provided activity sheet
- Review of story utilizing provided activity sheet

This class will use some note taking as we write or draw the components of a good retell and review. Students should be able to listen to a story and recall details. They should also have experience writing sentences or drawing and labeling pictures independently. Students will self assess their learning with a simple rubric using emojis in the first and last class.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Erika and I am an early childhood educator. I have taught first grade for 5 years, third grade for 2 years and currently I'm in my second year as an instructional coach. I love teaching elementary age students and I'm especially fond of math. I am also very passionate about student voice.

I attended the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga where I earned a Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education and a Master's Degree in School Leadership. I have my Administrator's License as well as an Instructional Coaching Certificate.

I know that all students can learn and I work hard to help student reach their full potential. I have worked in a variety of environments serving a wide range of students. I know that everyone learns differently and I work hard to use the most effective strategies for each learner.

When I am not teaching I am working on my student activism program called My Voice. I enjoy blogging and creating materials for teachers on TPT. I love hanging out with my husband, baby boy & yorkie. I also thoroughly enjoy running, yoga and coffee :).
