This early literacy class has many goals. This class should build students' ability to: • comprehend with increasing accuracy what they hear in conversations and in stories read aloud. • demonstrate understanding through their questions, comments, and actions. • use nonverbal gestures to show a response to adults and peers (e.g., nodding/smiling to show understanding/agreement, tilting head/frowning face to show confusion, or giving a thumbs up/down or to respond to questions) • appropriately contribute to discussions by commenting or asking questions • participate in songs and/or dances that require the response of various movements or gestures • participate successfully in games (such as “Simon Says”) • have multiple‐turn conversations with others, listening to others or extending/connecting to an idea expressed by the other person • speak loud enough so that what is being said can be heard • articulate individual words in a sentence • enunciate each sound or syllable in words • use appropriate intonation to represent emotion • appropriately identify items seen in real life, books, or pictures, naturally incorporating new terminology • use newly learned words to describe or explain in detail things seen in real life, books, or pictures • use descriptive language to compare, contrast, and categorize objects, people, and actions
