Join me for a fun reading adventure with The Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams. In this one time class, we will focus on the reading comprehension strategy of making inferences, reading "between the lines" in order to help deepen our understanding of the text. Why do we focus on making inferences? Inference skills are one of the key skills required for reading comprehension. Good comprehension cannot happen without inferencing -- it's a foundational skill. At the beginning of our class, I will teach the reading comprehension strategy of making inferences. I will use visual aids and examples to help build understanding. We will discuss how we can use the strategy as we read. I will share my screen with students and display the story for them. I will then model my thinking aloud for students as we read, so they can understand how I’m making inferences to deepen my understanding of our story. After seeing me model my thinking a few times, students will be encouraged to practice using the strategy with me as we stop and discuss our thinking. Students are encouraged to participate in the group discussions throughout the lesson. They will be supported through the process. These discussions will help them develop important thinking skills and apply them to their reading. At the end of our session, students have the option to complete a reading comprehension quiz over our story. There will be an answer key attached to the quiz so you can see how you did (optional). There will be no homework, but I do encourage students to read at home each day and apply what they’ve learned in class to their independent reading. The more students read and practice, the more they will see improvement in their reading comprehension. **The Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams Public Domain Book

I have a passion for teaching reading. I've taught 2nd grade for 8 years and have a Masters in Reading. I believe that reading is fundamental. I want my students to become lifelong readers and develop a love for reading. I believe the best way to achieve this is to create a reading environment and give students access to a variety of books.
