Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 7
In this class, we will study the folk tales, mythology, and legends of Russia and gain all the benefits of travel from the comfort of our own homes. Students in this class will learn facts about history and culture through the lens of popular folk tales and legends. Your child will learn to apply concepts from the core subjects of social studies, history, and literature. At the end of the lesson, we will develop critical thinking skills by discussing which character, story, or creature each student found most interesting and why, followed by an analysis of what each character or creature tells us about the country, the people who live there, and those who lived there many centuries ago.

We will start with a very brief overview of Russia's history, concentrating on important events that have shaped the people and society. Next, we will discuss stories that define their culture and traditions and their lasting importance in the cultural identity of Russia. We close with students sharing and discussing their favorite story or figure from that week.

This is a stand-alone class and no previous knowledge or work is necessary.

Students will receive a printable "Story Explorer" passport and a stamp for Russia. They can collect more "Story Explorer" passport stamps by signing up for additional "Story Explorer" classes!
Learning Goals
Students will come away from this class with an understanding of how stories shape and are shaped by people and cultures and gain a genuine excitement for storytelling.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
Since we will be discussing topics like folk tales and mythology, there is the occasional mention of war, violence, and death. Parents and students should be aware that Russian folklore includes some creepy characters, but we will focus mostly on the epic and funny stories. With a bachelor's degree in history and experience teaching both history and literature, I am equipped to discuss topics like these without going into any unnecessary details, while still bringing the essence of a story to life.
Supply List
Please be sure to print the Russia stamp and one passport (pick the color of your choice - you only need one!). It is not necessary to have it assembled prior to class time, as this is just for fun. You can add your new stamp to your passport, and sign up for another "Story Explorer" class to collect more!
