***MATERNITY LEAVE: I will be taking time off for maternity leave beginning in January. At this time, I plan to resume classes in April. I will update any changes here. I hope to see your learners back in class to talk all about mythology and fairy tales soon! :) *** In this class, we will study the folklore, mythology, and legends of Japan and gain all the benefits of travel from the comfort of our own homes. Students in this class will learn about history and culture through the lens of popular myths and legends. Your child will learn to apply concepts from the core subjects of social studies and literature. At the end of the lesson, we will develop critical thinking skills by discussing which character, story, or creature each student found most interesting and why, followed by an analysis of what the characters, stories, and creatures tells us about the Japan and the who lived there many centuries ago and crafted these stories. We will discuss a variety of Yōkai (creatures and spirits of Japanese mythology), some of which appear in popular movies, TV shows, and games today, including Pokemon, Studio Ghibli films, and Demon Slayer. Learners will also hear an epic story about a young hero who comes from humble beginnings, befriends some interesting animals, and was born from a fruit! This is a stand-alone class and no previous knowledge or work is necessary. Students will receive a printable "Story Explorer" passport and a stamp for Japan. They can collect more "Story Explorer" passport stamps by signing up for additional "Story Explorer" classes!
Other Details
Parental Guidance
Since we will be discussing topics like mythology and folklore, there is mention of war, violence, and death. Some of the creatures and monsters may be frightening but are no more creepy than the average Disney villain. Learners will be reminded that these stories are made-up and serve as entertainment.
Supply List
Please be sure to print the Japan stamp and one passport (pick the color of your choice - you only need one!). It is not necessary to have it assembled prior to class time, as this is just for fun. You can add your new stamp to your passport, and sign up for another "Story Explorer" class to collect more!

External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Hi parents and learners! My name is Alexandra and I love stories of all kinds.
I offer classes that survey stories from all over the world, including mythology, folklore, fairy tales, legends, literature, and true history. My classes teach students how to interpret stories in their historical and cultural context. I believe that the best way to learn about history and different cultures is through the stories a country, tribe, or any group of people tell about themselves and pass down to their own children.
I earned my degree in history from the University of California, Riverside, with an emphasis on ancient and medieval history. I studied abroad at the University of Oxford as part of my undergraduate degree.
I have been working with students ages five to eighteen over the last ten years as a teacher’s assistant, substitute, one-on-one tutor, and homeschool teacher.
I look forward to seeing you in a class and sharing stories that matter!
