Students will begin by writing the first story chapter and passing it onto a classmate to add the next chapter for the next meeting. They will then have to create the next chapter of a work that's been started by another student. By the final week, students will have contributed chapters to several completed stories. Classtime will include both instruction and sharing. After an initial lesson is given, students will share what they've written during the previous week and make decisions...
Students will learn how to be creative within boundaries and how to use someone else's ideas as a jumping-off point. Throughout they'll have moments where they "get their way," and moments where they have to back down--both valuable experiences! They'll also co-author several story projects they are proud of.
As a Young Adult author, I've traveled to schools all over the U.S. discussing my books, publishing, and creative writing with students. I've also taught high school English and elementary school. Kids have extraordinary creative gifts--imagination, fearlessness, tenacity--and I love being a part of their development.
Each week students will have a chapter to write. (How much time they spend and the length of the chapter is entirely up to them. If online schoolwork proves to be overwhelming, we may use class time to write--this definitely won't be an added stress!) 24 hours before the next class they will need to scan their work, or take a picture of it, and email it to me. I'll type it up for class the next day to be read and passed along.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
55 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
