Class Experience

The three most performed story ballets, also called narrative ballets - Swan Lake, Nutcracker and Sleeping Beauty - are whole worlds unto themselves, with many moving parts and lots of different characters.

Class will begin by hearing the basic storylines of each ballet, including historical information such as composers, choreographers and original cast members. Students will be encouraged to journal what they learn and to ask questions through this process.

Next, by utilizing pantomime, general ballet movements and the classical music associated with each of these ballets, students will then learn a few of the movements associated with each of the main characters.

Finally, we will put everything we have learned together and dance-act our own versions of each story-ballet, cementing the narrative of each ballet for our learners.

Learning Goals

Students will improve their understanding of the three main story ballets performed today.

Hi! Ms. Leigh, here!

I’m thrilled to be with you, here, in Outschool, and am looking forward to meeting each and every one of you!

My classes span a few genres, but some of the classes I’m super excited about teaching are Reggio-inspired, play-based Early Childhood Classes in Art, Movement, Literacy, Science and Math! I just recently finished a year-long certification with Sally Haughy of Fairy Dust Teaching and am now a full-fledged Wonder Tribe educator! I’m thrilled to be able to bring everything I learned over the last year to our classes!

The other side of my life revolves around teaching dance! I was lucky to be a professional dancer for 13 years, which allowed me to visit parts of the world and experience cultures I never would have otherwise! I’m certified to teach classical ballet through the Vaganova (Russian Method) Syllabus, Years 1-4 and Character Dance, Year 1, and am also certified through American Ballet Theater’s National Training Curriculum, to teach ballet, PrePrimary through Level 5. I’m so looking forward to exploring movement and dance with all of you, from our youngest dancers to our most experienced!

Whether I’m teaching dance or teaching early childhood academic classes, my teaching philosophy can be boiled down to two words: Relationship First. I truly believe that the best learning comes when a student and his or her family feels that the teacher is truly invested and sees and hears what makes a child unique. I am always striving to have a fun, upbeat experience that allows for interpersonal and dynamic learning.

Something to know about me: I love all things Disney! Lately, I’ve really enjoyed Disney Bounding (look that up if you’re curious!) & I bet you’ll see me in my Disney finest many times in class! Keep an eye out for that!

Looking forward to being together in the classroom! See you soon!
