Class Experience

We will have a wonderful time reading and discussing Kim Norman's book "I Know a Wee Piggy," with the permission of the author. We will have opportunity for sharing and discussion, interactive reading, and creating a "messy piggy" drawing as we read the book and learn about all the mischief the "wee piggy" encounters.

We will begin with introductions. Students are invited to bring a "pig" toy to share with classmates if they'd like. We will first explore background knowledge. Students will discuss what they know about pigs: Where do they live? What do they eat? What color are pigs?

Next, we will begin the reading + coloring activity. As the teacher reads the book, the students will add colors to the pig on their printout. By the time the reading ends, students will have a colorful illustration of a messy piggy who has gotten into many hijinks. Students will enjoy shouting out each color that they see in the book: brown, red, white, pink, yellow, black, green, gray, orange, purple, blue.

We will discuss the book to check for comprehension, and students will get to show their art to the teacher and peers. Students will be able to discuss their favorite colors. If time allows, we will extend class by chanting "This Little Piggy."

Our class will be fun, funny, and engaging. This book is very cute and is so much for for children in this age group! I am so excited to see your child in class! :-)

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! I'm Lauren Brogden. I have a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration from The University of Tennessee. I have a Master of Arts in Teaching from East Tennessee University, with a concentration in Middle Grades (4-8). I am certified in Middle Grades (4-8, All Subjects) as well as English (7-12). I have completed a 120-Hour TESOL Certification to teach English Language Learners.

I have taught several subjects and age groups in public schools, including 5th grade Reading, 4th grade Science and Social Studies, and 7th grade math/Pre-Algebra. I have taught general, SPED inclusion, and honors math classes. Since becoming a parent, I have transitioned to teaching ESL online part-time. I have taught English to Chinese students aged 3-14 for three years. I’ve had some unique opportunities through working for Chinese ESL companies, including a paid trip to Harvard University for a seminar, and being invited to teach “Open Classes” to 1000+ students at once!

I like working with different age groups of children for different reasons. I always thought that upper elementary and middle school students were my "comfort zone" but I've been pleasantly surprised at the fun and silly side of my personality that has come alive when teaching preschool-aged ESL students, as well as my own daughter, who just turned four.

I want to be the type of teacher I would want for my own child. I want each student to feel engaged and confident during class! Parents of my ESL students have often left feedback that I am “patient,” “kind,” and “gentle.” I want to provide an environment in which students feel welcome and excited to learn!
